This image is shows a large white window pane. It has one large single centre panel and two equal length ones divided in two. In total there are 5 windows. Their is a window blind and it is almost to the window sill. Just above the window sill is a green sheet of card attached to the window. The card is part of a simple alert system to allow elderly people to signal whether they are OK or need help

Simple Alert System

I saw this simple alert system on Facebook and wanted to share it here. It is so simple and cost-effective. Anyone can use this simple alert system. All you need is a neighbour or two, 3 pieces of coloured card and a way to attach the card to the window.

Traffic Light

This works like a traffic light system with a green for “Go” or in this case to show “All is well”. Amber means ” I could do with some help running an errand or something in the home”. Red indicates ” I need some help NOW” or “All is not well”.

Criticism

Interestingly, I shared this on social media & received mixed reviews. Many objected saying this merely advertised that someone was vulnerable. Whilst I appreciate this, the same can be said for grab rails, key safes and a mobility scooter parked outside. Sadly, nothing is perfect and it’s a sad indictment of society that being elderly and living alone makes you vulnerable to unsavoury characters.

Low Tech

This simple, low-tech system is ideal for anyone who hasn’t embraced technology. We shouldn’t assume that everyone has or uses the internet or thinks to pick up the phone should they need help. Someone who has visual or hearing problems may struggle to use a conventional phone and might not have the money or inclination to buy one that can help with their sensory losses.

Other Alert Systems

Additionally, there are alternative ways of summoning help which are chargeable and utilise technology. These are provided by local authorities, tech companies and Charities. These utilise the phone line and have a call unit installed. Users wear a pendant or wrist band which is used to call for help. Read my blog post about these services here.
